June brought the start of summer and a scorching heatwave, leading to a race to supermarket aisles as Brits invested in air conditioning, paddling pools, and handheld fans.
And, according to the BBC, there could be several more heatwaves on the horizon for 2026, with above-average temperatures also expected in July and August.
If you’re looking for ways to keep you and your family cool and distracted from more record-breaking heat, read your list of the most exciting, family-friendly blockbusters to keep you entertained this summer – then seek out air-conditioned sanctuary in a cinema near you.
1. Toy Story 5 (19 June)
Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang return for a fifth Toy Story outing this summer. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack are among the returning cast and are joined by Greta Lee and Conan O’Brien.
The toys enter the digital age when Bonnie (their owner since the end of Toy Story 3) is gifted a tablet called Lilypad.
Initially thrilled, Bonnie is soon drawn into the world of social media and online bullying. Meanwhile, Jessie sets out to find a new friend for Bonnie, one who – like Bonnie – still plays with analogue toys.
Toy Story 5 is sure to continue the box-office success of the previous films in the franchise, helped by a closing credits song from Taylor Swift.
2. Supergirl (25 June)
Australian Milly Alcock takes the lead as Supergirl in her own solo adventure, having previously appeared in 2025’s Superman. She stars alongside British rising star Eve Ridley and Jason Momoa.
The film’s simple revenge plot revolves around an intergalactic pirate and human trafficker, and the search for a kidnapped dog.
The film is certified 12A, so one to watch with older family members, due to its fantastical violence and themes of illness and bereavement.
3. Minions & Monsters (1 July)
The lovable, if disaster-prone, Minions first appeared in Despicable Me back in 2010.
Since then, they have appeared in three Despicable Me sequels as well as standalone prequels. Minions & Monsters marks their third solo outing.
This time around, the Minions are in 1920s Hollywood. After accidentally stumbling onto a film set, the madcap adventure sees the Minions propelled into the spotlight, becoming stars of the Silent Era.
But when sound films arrive, the Minions struggle to maintain their success, in large part because no one can understand their language, Minionese.
The Minions decide to make their own film, Minions & Monsters, and go on the hunt for their cast.
4. Moana (10 July)
Continuing the long run of Disney animated features to get the live-action treatment, Moana returns to cinemas in a new (if familiar) guise.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprises his role of Maui from the original film and is joined by a new cast, beloved songs from the original, and a new centrepiece musical number.
For those yet to see the original, the story follows Moana, daughter of the village chief on Motonui, a fictional Polynesian island. While she understands her obligations to one day take over from her father and lead her people, Moana feels herself constantly drawn to the sea.
When blight befalls the island and Moana’s grandmother reveals a secret from the tribe’s past, Moana takes to the ocean in search of the demigod Maui. She hopes he will help her restore the heart of Te Fiti and lift the curse that is causing the island’s crops to fail.
5. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (29 July)
Tom Holland first donned the Spidey suit in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and two sequels, Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), quickly followed.
Tom Holland’s iteration of the character (along with those portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) was later brought into the full Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which saw Holland appear in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America: Civil War.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first in a planned new trilogy starring Holland, with returning cast members including Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. Jon Bernthal will also star as The Punisher, with Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner / The Hulk.
A Doctor Strange curse at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home means that no one remembers Peter Parker. With MJ away at college (and with a new love interest), Peter Parker is alone and committed to anonymously protecting the streets of his beloved New York.
When a new threat emerges, Parker must battle evil, form new alliances, and continue the turbulent transition from adolescence to early adulthood.
