Horror films are big business, and 2025 has been a particularly successful year.

According to the BBC, the top three horror films released so far – Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and 28 Years Later – took a combined £41.3 million at the UK box office. And that was before scary season even started.

But what if you want to sit down with your children and enjoy a scary film as a family this Halloween weekend? Well, you’re in luck.

Thankfully, there’s no shortage of animated and comedy horror films to keep little monsters of all ages entertained.

Here are just seven of them.

1. Labyrinth (1986)

When the little brother of Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) is stolen by Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie in an iconic role), she must travel into Jareth’s Labyrinth to rescue him.

She has 13 hours to solve the maze, or her brother will be turned into a goblin.

This cult musical fantasy is directed by Jim Henson (The Muppets) and stars an incredible array of creatures in his inimitable style.

Rated U (Universal) – the film is suitable for all, although parental discretion is advised as some scenes could prove scary for younger children.

2. The Addams Family (1991)

The latest incarnation of the Addams Family, Tim Burton’s Wednesday, has achieved huge success for Netflix. Aided by Jenna Ortega’s performance in the titular role and a certain viral dance, the first series broke viewership records around the world.

But the family’s first appearance on the big screen occurred 30 years earlier (and the original TV series another 27 years before that).

The 1991 film version starred Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia as Morticia and Gomez, alongside Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ricci in the role of Wednesday. Based on Charles Addams’ 1930s comic strip, Tim Burton was originally in line to direct but was busy with Batman Returns.

Uncle Fester (Lloyd), long-lost brother of Gomez, returns to the family fold after a 25-year absence. But what happened to him in the intervening years, and could the man in their midst be an imposter?

The film is rated PG. Some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children.

3. Hocus Pocus (1993)

Hocus Pocus is a cult classic, spawning a 2022 sequel that could well open the door for further films.

The original is a 1993 fantasy comedy that sees a teenage boy light the Black Flame Candle and accidentally resurrect three witches more than 300 years after they were executed. So begins a night of terror as the witches (played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) stalk the town of Salem, Massachusetts. They need to sacrifice a child before sunrise to lift an ancient curse and ensure their resurrection is permanent.

Capturing the Halloween spirit, the film has scares and laughs for all the family.

The film is rated PG. Some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children (especially those under eight) so parental discretion is advised.

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Often featured in lists of the best festive films, you don’t need to wait until December to enjoy The Nightmare Before Christmas. From the mind of Tim Burton, and marking the directorial debut of Henry Selick, the film follows Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town.

In this stop-motion classic, with songs by regular Burton collaborator Danny Elfman, Skellington accidentally discovers Christmas Town and is bitten by the festive bug.

This musical comedy is an enchanting twist on traditional Christmas and Halloween movies.

Rated PG, some scenes may be scary for younger children.

5. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)

Directed by Steve Box and Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is fun for all the family.

With Tottington Hall’s giant vegetable competition fast approaching, Wallace and Gromit step in to protect the villagers’ prized crops from rabbits with their business venture, Anti-Pesto.

During an attempt to brainwash the captured rabbits into no longer craving vegetables, Wallace’s latest invention, the Mind Manipulation-O-Matic, backfires. A were-rabbit is unleashed, and the neighbourhood’s back gardens and greenhouses are no longer safe.

Featuring the duo’s irresistible brand of humour and some outstanding voice performances, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a Halloween must.

Rated U (Universal) – Suitable for all.

6. Hotel Transylvania (2012)

When Johnny, a human, stumbles upon a hotel run by Count Dracula, he falls in love with Drac’s 118-year-old daughter, Mavis.

Featuring the voice talents of Andy Samberg, Adam Sandler, and Selena Gomez, the film follows Dracula as he does everything in his power to prevent romance from blossoming between Johnny and Mavis.

With a host of memorable hotel guests and some impressive guest stars (including Steve Buscemi), the film spawned three more sequels.

Hotel Transylvania is rated U (Universal) – Suitable for all.

7. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018)

RL Stine created the go-to series of horror books for a whole generation of children, and his creations were brought to the big screen in 2015. Jack Black starred as the author (and one of his most famous antagonists), and he returned in 2018 for the sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.

Teenagers Sonny and Sam agree to clear an abandoned house and accidentally awaken Slappy the Dummy. After the boys take the ventriloquist doll home, Slappy soon comes to life and threatens to wreak havoc on their hometown, just in time for Halloween.

With the help of Sonny’s older sister, Sarah, the children must confront RL Stine’s evil creations and save the day, possibly with the help of the author himself.

The film is rated PG.
